Channel Islands Coop kicks off partnership with Evie
The Channel Islands Coop (CI Coop) has partnered with electric vehicle car share service, EVie, to provide the residents of Jersey with more access to sustainable transport options.
The partnership will kick off from 5th September 2024 and will give communities the ability to collect and drop off a range of EVie cars and vans from a variety of CI Coop stores across Jersey.
With two EVie vehicles per space for limited impact on CI Coop customers, the A2A and A2B car share service will be available across four stores on the island
Two A2A vehicles at St Helier Grand Marche
Four A2B vehicles at St Helier Grand Marche
Two A2B Floating Spaces at Beaumont Coop
Two A2B Spaces at St Brelade Coop
Two A2B Spaces at St Peter Grand Marche
EVie vehicles will be easily visible through identifiable, blue-painted spaces and clear branding, making travelling sustainably easier than ever for Islanders looking for temporary and environmentally friendly transport. This initiative complements a wider network of over 40 EVie vehicles and more than 50 spaces across Jersey, significantly enhancing the convenience and reach of shared electric mobility on the island.
Carl Winn, Head of Community and Sustainability, Channel Islands Coop said: “We are delighted to be partnering with EVie to supply our community with sustainable electric vehicles.
“Prioritising sustainability is a vital part of our overall mission at the Channel Islands Coop, and this partnership provides a fantastic opportunity to ensure that the residents of Jersey have the ability to make more sustainable choices.”
Nick Perchard-Rees, CEO at EVie, added: “At EVie, we are committed to providing simple and affordable access to sustainable modes of travel for all. With emissions accounting for nearly half of Jersey’s overall output, our collaboration with key partners like CI Coop is crucial in making a real impact. This partnership enables us to offer more Islanders the chance to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier environment. We look forward to building on this early collaboration and finding even more ways to support CI Coop members and the broader community in their journey towards sustainability.”
EVie concentrates on growing successful van hire with Guernsey Post as bikes not relaunching in Guernsey for summer 2023
2 months after launch, short term van hire provided by Guernsey Post at Envoy House using EVie technology is growing quickly in popularity. The joint venture was launched on 1st February to make more efficient use of the Guernsey Post fleet of electric vans by making some of them available to the public to rent by the hour via the EVie app.
Barrie Duerden, the local EVie representative says:
“We were delighted to partner with the most trusted local Brand, Guernsey Post and the public seem to be taking to the service. In the initial two months, rentals have grown in 5 of 7 weeks and are now at 3 times the initial volume. With Easter coming up and the prospect of better weather, we expect demand to pick up further as islanders buy and move large items, spring clean and move house. Renting a van for a few hours to get these jobs done can be an attractive proposition.”
Steve Sheridan, Finance Director at Guernsey Post said:
“We are really pleased with the level of interest and performance in the EVie vans. Instead of selling our older fleet vehicles repurposing them for hire is a low cost, low risk commercial opportunity for us and means we can support Evie with their vision of a sustainable and affordable travel solution for our local community”.
EVie has also announced that the seasonal EVieBike service will not be returning this summer. Barrie Duerden explains:
“The old fleet of bikes were at the end of their life and have been donated to The Eleanor Foundation to start a second life in Tanzania. We have looked very hard at establishing a permanent base for a local dockless electric bike business but in order to cover the fixed costs, we would require a significant improvement in permanent public realm shared mobility infrastructure in the island. We continue to work with the States of Guernsey to assist them in creating the necessary environment for shared bike and car mobility to flourish, particularly as our experience in Jersey shows that it can be successful.”
EVie and Guernsey Post collaborate to launch shared electric van fleet
EVie and Guernsey Post have today launched a shared electric van service.
Vans owned by Guernsey Post have been fitted with technology supplied by EVie to make it possible for anyone with an EVie account to hire an electric van by the hour. The EVie branded vans can be used for anything from moving house to Longue Hougue recycling centre. All booking reservations need to be made using the new EVie Shared Mobility app.
Boley Smillie, CEO of Guernsey Post said, “We are really pleased to support EVie with their vision of a more sustainable transport system for Guernsey and this is a low-risk commercial opportunity for us to make the most of our investment in our electric fleet.”
Jamie Kelly, CEO of EVie said “EVie has been offering a shared bike, car and van hire service in Jersey for over three years. Van hire has proved to be one of the most popular parts of its entire shared vehicle fleet, so we are delighted to be working with Guernsey Post in this way as it enables us to expand our service of simple, sustainable, and affordable travel to our Guernsey customers.”
Initially there will be three electric vans made available by Guernsey Post for year-round hire. The fleet may be expanded depending on demand.
EVie partners with Parish of St Brelade to offer electric van sharing
EVie has partnered with the Parish of St Brelade to launch a van sharing station, providing both the Parish and the public access to hourly electric van rental.
The electric van will be parked at the side of the Parish Hall and when not in use by the Parking Control Officer can be rented by the general public.
EVie donates 100 electric bikes to The Eleanor Foundation
We are thrilled to announce that the current stock of over 100 first generation EVieBikes will be donated to The Eleanor Foundation and will see further life in Africa. Barrie Duerden, Director said:
“With the current stock of bikes at the end of their working life, in keeping with our sustainability ethos we wanted to ensure that they were recycled. We also wanted to assist local charities, so donating the bikes to The Eleanor Foundation is the perfect outcome.”
Allister Carey, Founder Director of The Eleanor Foundation explained what will happen:
“We are delighted that EVie are in a position to donate these bikes. The batteries will be stripped out and sent to the UK for recycling. The bikes themselves will be delivered to the UK charity Re-Cycle for onward shipping to partner organisations in various African countries where they will be used within rural communities. In Guernsey, many bikes are either thrown away or lie unused in sheds and garages whilst many people living in Africa have no access to transport of any kind. We have been sending bikes to Re-Cycle since 2013 and this welcome donation from EVie will bring the total number of bikes received ever closer to 4,000.
EVie is keen to expand its services by offering cars and vans whilst also partnering with the States of Guernsey and through its Corporate Partner Programme; local firms and hospitality businesses. Jamie Kelly, EVie Chief Executive explained:
“This programme allows firms to reduce their carbon footprint by having access to a fleet of shareable electric vehicles from micro cars to vans. This will help their guests, clients and staff with the cost of living crisis, reducing CO2 emissions, reducing congestion and easing parking. Several companies operating on a pan island basis already use the scheme.
EVie acquires Home James companies: Carback, Valeting and its nascent electric Taxi company
JEV Company Limited, the company behind the EVie electric bike and car sharing businesses, is delighted to announce the acquisition of Home James.
Home James comprises three distinct businesses: Home James Carback, Home James Valeting Service and Home James Taxi Service, an all-electric taxi service; these businesses are complementary to the EVie shared electric transport offering.
The merger will offer significant synergies and benefits for both parties: for EVie it will provide the opportunity to develop revenue streams that are counter cyclical to its car and bike sharing businesses, and also to boost its management team; for Home James it will provide the capital and resources to grow its three business lines and to take advantage of the EVie technology platform; and for the Home James team to join with one of the fastest growing businesses in the Channel Islands.
Gavin Breeze, the Chairman of JEV Company Limited, said: “We are delighted to welcome Home James and its employees into the EVie family and look forward to working with them to grow all our respective business lines. We are particularly pleased to welcome Alex Morgan onto our board and to welcome Miguel Pereira as the new General Manager of both EVie and the existing Home James businesses, reporting to CEO Jamie Kelly”.
Alex Morgan, the Chairman of Home James, said: “We are thrilled to be joining forces with JEV Co and we look forward to working with them to develop all sorts of exciting green transport solutions for Jersey and beyond”.
Highway Code changes prioritise active travel
The Highway Code has been updated in both Jersey and Guernsey to help improve road safety. The changes introduce a hierarchy, putting pedestrians and cyclists first. Here’s the lowdown:
Hierarchy of road users The changes place those most at risk – pedestrians and cyclists – at the top of the hierarchy. Those in charge of vehicles that can cause the greatest harm in the event of a collision bear the greatest responsibility to take care and reduce the danger they pose to others. This applies most strongly to drivers of large goods and passenger vehicles, vans/minibuses, cars/taxis and motorcycles.
Cyclists, horse riders and drivers of horse drawn vehicles likewise have a responsibility to reduce danger to pedestrians.
People crossing the road at junctions The updates clarify that when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way.
If you’re looking to turn into a road and a pedestrian is crossing it or waiting to cross, you must now give them priority, even if there’s no zebra crossing.
Overtaking when driving or cycling Motorists should give cyclists more room when overtaking – at least 1.5 metres. They should allow at least 2 metres of space and keep to a low speed when passing people walking in the road where there is no pavement.
Parking, charging and leaving vehicles Where people driving or passengers in a vehicle are able to do so, they should open the door using their hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening. For example, using their left hand to open a door on their right-hand side.
When using an electric vehicle charging point, for example with an EVie, people should park close to the charge point and avoid creating a trip hazard.
EVie has partnered with the Government of Jersey in an initiative designed to help you save money, keep fit and reduce your carbon footprint.
There is an abundance of underused, half-price, car parking within a short cycling distance of St Helier. EVie is bringing these car parking spaces into closer, more convenient reach of town by providing EVieBikes at two dedicated Park&Ride spaces. You can now take advantage of cheaper parking near town, grab an EVieBike and cycle on to your final destination. The dedicated Park&Ride stations are in addition to the other Evie bike rack locations along the Waterfront.
Where can I Park&Ride?
Here’s a useful map to help you plan your trip.
Orange – Half-price parking Blue – Dedicated Park&Ride EVieBike stations (Layby 3 and Layby 6) Green – Standard EVieBike stations
Always check the EVieBike app for available bikes at your nearest station. Due to demand, some stations may run out of bikes during busy periods. We do our very best to ensure the continuous availability of EVieBikes at popular stations throughout the day.
The benefits
Parking in St. Helier costs 88p per hour, or £7.92 per day (8am – 5pm). Half-price parking at the below car parks is £4.40/day (8am – 5pm). Some car parks are even free all year.
A 10 minute EVieBike journey from your car to central St. Helier will cost just £1. That’s a £2 return trip – a great way to save money on parking and fuel.
And that’s just the financial benefit. Active travel is a great way to exercise and stimulate the brain before starting work.
You’ll also be shaving around 132g of CO2 from your carbon footprint for every kilometre you swap-out four wheels for two.
